TIPS FOR SAFELY AND EASILY PACKING ELECTRONICS WHEN MOVING
Many people will tell you that their devices are their most prized possessions, aside from sentimental objects. Electronics are easy to break and replace, so make sure you pack them carefully so they stay in good shape when you move. First and foremost, Be Prepared – being well-prepared pays dividends!
Take some shots before unplugging that complicated DVD, stereo, 3-D TV system with four video gaming consoles so you know how to reassemble it afterwards. You’ll know where all the cables go when it’s time to reinstall them, and it’ll take some of the guessing out of the process at your new home.
Then unplug all of those cords and store them with the appropriate electrical item until you can label them. One of the most difficult aspects of packing is keeping cords and accessories together.
There’s nothing more aggravating than finishing a move and being unable to locate the remote when all you want to do is unpack. Rather than putting wires, remotes, and accessories in one box, attempt to group them with the electronic item they belong to. If you can’t pack your cords, remotes, and accessories with the appropriate device, mark them. Get some velcro and painters tape from your local office supply store (comes in multiple colors and is easy to remove). Assign a color to each electronic equipment and wrap the cords with care. Painter’s tape can be used to label relevant cords and remotes.
Remove any temperature-sensitive devices, such as USB sticks, SD cards, and printer ink, before packing the equipment themselves. These should be handled separately and in plastic bags because they might be harmed by excessive temperatures or, in the case of ink, make a big mess!
Packaging is Important to Protect your Electronics
If you still have the original box, that’s wonderful! This box will be the perfect size and form for storing your electronic item, and it is frequently the finest option for packing. If you don’t have the original box, choose one that is somewhat larger than the thing you wish to pack so that the object and the box are separated by material.
Other items that you need to transfer, such as fabrics, make excellent packaging materials. Packing material can be anything from sheets to towels to garments. Avoid using packing peanuts and other materials that can create static electricity (such as fleece and some plastics), as they can cause electrical damage. Another packing material to avoid is newspaper, which can harm delicate screens.
Double-sided packing tape can be useful for securing packing materials to the bottom and sides of the box. Wrap the object with bubble wrap or other appropriate material and fasten it. If you’re going to use tape, make sure it’s only on the packing material and not on the side of the electronic equipment itself. If possible, cram your accessories, wires, and remotes into the box with stuffing material between them and the bigger component at this point. This ensures that none of the smaller things move during the relocation.
