To compare moving companies fairly, give them the same description of the job. A lower total may cover a different item list, access route or level of packing. Start with photos of the furniture and loose items, both addresses, floor levels, the preferred date and any packing, dismantling, disposal or storage you need.

A professional moving team should be able to explain how its proposed service matches that brief. For house moving, check that the written quotation covers the same inventory, pickup and delivery points, and agreed work. Ask for clarification where a service is described only as “included” without saying what will be done.
Compare the scope before comparing the total
- Items and volume: does each quotation use the same photos or item list, and are special items identified?
- Access: are stairs, carrying distance, lift changes, loading arrangements and the work window recorded?
- Work: which packing materials, dismantling, reassembly and placement tasks are included?
- Separate services: are disposal, storage, extra stops and any technical work clearly identified?
- Changes: who confirms the revised scope and price if an item, route or date changes?
Special items need their own description. For a piano, delicate furniture or an appliance, provide dimensions, photos and the access route. If disconnection, reconnection or specialist technical work is required, identify who is responsible and whether it is part of the written scope. Do not assume that every task is included simply because the item appears on the moving list.
Use the moving price guide to understand the job details that affect a quotation, then compare like with like. For example, if one quote includes loose-item packing and another covers only transport of packed items, ask for the same packing scope to be priced before deciding. This is a scope comparison, not a fixed-price example.
Before booking, keep the accepted quotation, item list, date, access notes and contact details together. Walk through any uncertainty with the mover while the plan can still be adjusted. On moving day, use that agreed brief to explain placement and raise changes with the coordinator; it is more useful than trying to reconstruct the scope after loading has started.
For a Move Move assessment, send the same item list and access photos you will use when comparing quotations. You can also review the site access information for your pickup and delivery buildings.
