Move without bringing pests along
Inspect, isolate and clean before anything enters a moving carton
A move can transfer bed bugs, cockroaches or other pests when an affected item is packed with clean belongings. The safest plan is to identify warning signs early, keep suspected items separate and arrange appropriate treatment before transport.
Do not hide a suspected infestation inside sealed moving boxes. Inspect storage items and furniture, isolate anything suspicious, clean what can be cleaned safely, and engage a licensed pest-control operator when treatment is needed.
A mover can plan packing and transport, but moving is not pest treatment. Tell the mover before the quotation if any item is suspected to be affected.
Inspect before packing
Check items while there is still time to separate and treat them—not while the truck is waiting.
- Look along mattress seams, upholstered furniture joints and bed frames.
- Check carton folds, bags and items brought out of storage.
- Look for live insects, shed skins, droppings, egg cases or unusual spotting.
- Keep a simple inventory so inspected and suspected groups are not mixed.
Isolate suspected items
Move suspicious items away from clean cartons and soft furnishings. Do not carry them through the home repeatedly or place them in the same staging area as cleared belongings.
Tell the mover early
Explain which items are affected or suspected before the job is accepted. This allows the company to assess whether the work can proceed and what preparation is required.
Use the right professional
Where treatment is required, use a licensed vector control operator. Do not expect moving staff or packing materials to solve an active infestation.
Clean according to the item and pest risk

Washable fabrics
Launder washable fabrics at the hottest temperature the care label safely permits, then keep cleaned items separate from anything not yet checked.
Furniture and cracks
Vacuum seams and crevices carefully where appropriate; dispose of vacuum contents securely. Professional steam or other treatment may be needed for an infestation.
Pesticides and repellents
Use only products registered for the intended use and follow the label exactly. Do not place loose mothballs or unlabelled chemicals into moving cartons, mix products, or apply a restricted-use product without the required professional control.
Pack food separately and keep it sealed
Open, leaking or perishable food can attract pests and contaminate other belongings. Use sealed food-safe containers, keep chilled items at a safe temperature, discard spoiled goods and never mix food with cleaning chemicals or pest-control products.
Before loading, remove crumbs and spills from kitchen appliances, wipe dry storage containers and check reusable bags and cartons.
Prepare the destination before delivery
A clean, dry receiving area makes it easier to inspect cartons and spot a problem early.
- Clean cabinets, floor edges and appliance spaces before move-in.
- Remove unwanted cardboard and refuse promptly.
- Store food covered and keep sinks and storage areas dry.
- Seal accessible gaps where appropriate and monitor after unpacking.
