When checking the Chinese almanac for auspicious moving dates, you may notice the terms Relocation (遷徙/移徙) and Housewarming (入宅). What’s the difference?
This refers to the process of moving from an old residence to a new one. Since the new house may have been previously occupied, it already carries “human energy.” The relocation ritual can be simple or more elaborate depending on personal preference.
This refers to the formal ritual of officially moving into a new residence, symbolizing the start of a new life. Beyond just moving items, a housewarming ceremony tends to be more formal, involving offerings, incense prayers, or bringing symbolic items like rice, water, and salt to represent prosperity. The purpose is to create a harmonious atmosphere in the new home, bringing peace and happiness to the family.
Besides relying on the almanac, there are several methods to help you pick a suitable moving date.
Avoid days that clash with your Chinese zodiac sign, especially for the family’s main breadwinner.
Example: Those born in the Year of the Rat should avoid days that clash with the Horse.
Using your Bazi chart, choose dates that are compatible with your Five Elements. This method is more personalized and often requires a Feng Shui master or an online Bazi date-selection tool.
Avoid moving during the rainy season or extreme cold. Choose a sunny, pleasant day to make the move smoother.
Avoid family birthdays, memorial days, or certain festivals that may affect the household’s energy.
For example:
Moving during Qingming, Mid-Autumn, or Dragon Boat holidays may cause delays due to traffic congestion.
During the 7th lunar month (Ghost Month), elders often avoid moving, fearing bad luck. However, if you don’t mind, following almanac-recommended dates is still fine—especially since modern life leaves limited time windows for moving.
Always look at the forecast in advance. Prepare waterproof covers if it rains. Strong winds or extreme heat can also cause inconvenience.
Can moving and housewarming be on the same day?
Yes, they can, but traditionally they are separated. If time allows, some prefer to do relocation and housewarming rituals on different dates.
Don’t enter the new home empty-handed.
Bring money, red packets, or symbolic items for prosperity when entering for the first time.
Pregnant women should avoid moving.
Tradition suggests it may disturb the fetus’s spirit.
Traffic jams and limited parking can disrupt moving efficiency. It’s best to move outside peak hours.
💡 Non-peak hours: 9am–3pm is generally smoother, faster, and more efficient for moving.

An auspicious moving date is believed to bring smoother relocation and a positive start in your new home.
It’s optional. Some families follow zodiac compatibility and Feng Shui calendars, while others simply choose a practical date that suits their schedule.
Morning is usually better for weather, traffic, and condo management approvals.
Yes, many condos require prior booking of lifts and loading bays. Management offices may also limit weekend moves, so check early.
Of course. The most important factors are preparation, coordination, and peace of mind.
Not from us. However, demand is higher, so availability can be limited. Booking early avoids price surges from other movers.
